Energy Savings

HVAC products have energy efficiency ratings to help the user understand how well those products use the electrical energy that powers them. These are explanations of some of these terms.

HSPF

HSPF stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor and is used to measure the efficiency of air source heat pumps. HSPF is a ratio of BTU heat output over a typical heating season to watt-hours of electricity used. It has units of BTU/watt-hr. Air Source Heat Pumps with an HSPF of 8.2 or higher qualify for the Energy Star rating.

HSPF Savings

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and is used to measure the efficiency of air conditioners. SEER is the ratio of BTU cooling output during a typical cooling season to watt-hours of electricity used. It has units of BTU/watt-hr. Central Air Conditioners and Air Source Heat Pumps with a SEER of 15 or higher qualify for the Energy Star rating.
